Michael C. Todd Journal Entry #1 Ambrose Bierces short story, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, was an interesting example of stream of understanding memoir. I enjoyed the narrators switch from first-person to third-person narrative mode. His internal point of view granted the indorser an elaborate insight into the thoughts and feelings of the storys protagonist, Peyton Farquhar. Bierce described Peyton as, About thirty-five long time of age. He was a civilian, if one might judge from his habit, which was that of a planter. His features were good--a straight nose, firm mouth, broad forehead, from which his long, dark hair was comb straight back, falling behind his ears to the collar of his well-fitting frock coat. He wore a mustache and pointed beard, but no whiskers; his look were large and dark gray, and had a kindly expression.(Gutenberg p.2). This description helps the reader to become to a greater extent visually involved with Peyton. It allows you to fabricate the come across of a man condemned to death; which, in my opinion, makes the story more personal to you as the reader. The story goes on to explain the events lead-in up to the occurrence, and how Peyton was, in a sense, set up by a disguised federal scout. Bierce slowly manipulates your views on Peyton to military position with him.

Peyton, the protagonist, is portrayed as a patriot who would do anything for the southern cause. The narrator wrote that, No service was too humble for him to come in aid of the South, no adventure too equivocal for him to undertake if consistent with the character of a civilian who was at heart a soldier (Gutenberg p.4). Peyton was fighting for his homeland and for the safeguard of his family; which in the end lead to his unfortunate demise. As the sergeant-at-law steps aside, Peyton drops to his death. It is at this point the use conscious narration truly begins, where the change from third to first-person narrative, and Bierces vivid descriptions of Peytons subconscious feelings unfold. It...
