The Chimney Sweeper The speaker of this poem starts off telling the earshot that he was sold to work as a chimney sweep at a truly young senesce after his mother dies. This establishes a setting for the poem since patently children were commonly used as chimney sweeps because of their size during the eighteenth & 19th centuries. In the poem when Tom is getting his head shaved the narrator steps up as an older figure and amenities the younger boy when he needs it most. He tells Tom that it is best that his hair be shaven so it volition not get ruined from the black soot. Then that in reality night Tom has a dream that all the boys are locked up in coffins of black(Blake 12) and are set submit by an angel who has the key. The plausible meanings for the coffin in Toms dream could have been death or plane the sweepers actual lives.

Meaning it could have been the boys in the dark, cold, unclosed chimneys ( nonliteralally a coffin) cleaning. The angel then lets them out into a gorgeous world where they are free of burden. The coffin also could be a way of expressing the oppression of every day life, and how it was surd and disturbing for the workers (especially at a young age). The sweeper children then go bathe in the river and become naked and white(Blake 16) because they are now clean. There is a literal and metaphoric meaning to the beginning of these stanzas. As chimneysweepers the children would all be very dirty.
