We can see from the incident that Fatine got arrested. alternatively of blaming her for harming a drinker, Jean released her because he knew that Fatine was just trying to cheer herself. Afterward, Jean tried to help Fatine further, who was on her death bed. He went to save Cossete, who was given away to the Thenadiers. And hence, he gained his third dimensional character father.
(3) Father:
Jean treated Cossete as his accept daughter. Best residential area and best education were offered. He hoped Cossete could undergo her miserable childhood, and thus followed his promise with Fantine.
However, it seemed that Cossete was tired to be protected. She was willing to understand more about the world, and most important, she require LOVE. Therefore, Jean needed to learn how to protect Cossete without jam her perspective and future.
